A few reasons why we chose PRESENTE (preh-sehn-teh) as our name:
- In Spanish, when taking roll call upon hearing your name, you raise your hand and exclaim presente! to denote your presence at the place.
- It is a phrase commonly used in Latinx songs after calling out the names of Hispanic countries of origin.
- There’s no denying that Latinos are HERE to stay (presente) – in Western, PA.
The need for connection in the community continues to grow!
María Manautou Matos is a Puerto Rico native who has lived in the Pittsburgh region for 20+ years. She has first-hand experience of Pittsburgh as a newly arrived Latino, a young student, a Hispanic professional, and as part of a settled Latino family wondering how to stay close to her roots.
Manautou has worked in bilingual marketing communications for over 15 years, most recently serving as Marketing Director for Brightside Academy. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and a master’s degree from Duquesne University.
While attending CMU, as an executive board member of the Spanish and Latin Student Association she organized the campus’s first Latin American Food Festival.
This single event continues to motivate Maria to make an impact for the region’s Latino community, and is one of the main inspirations for creating PRESENTE Pittsburgh Latino Magazine.
