The great masses that normally visit our region’s parks to enjoy their attractions did not arrive this summer, leading to the decision for an early closure at Kennywood, Sandcastle (Pittsburgh) and Idlewild, SoakZone (Ligonier).
The last day to enjoy the parks will be Monday, September 7 – Labor Day.
Lower attendance and the great challenges that Covid19 has caused to its operations are the big culprits.
The administration most likely decided to minimize losses stemming from increases in operating costs following sanitization, supervision and other regulations. They are already focusing on starting a new chapter for the 2021 season.
In a statement, Kennywood General Manager Brandon Leonatti regretted the cancellation of the famous Halloween Phantom Freight Nights and Holiday Lights show at the end of the year given the uncertainty of the virus. Leonatti invited the public to enjoy the remaining activities scheduled for next week and to visit the park once again in 2021.
Both Kennywood and Idlewild have extended their passes from 2020 to 2021 according to their statement.
This with the expectation that by then things will more closely resemble the normal seasons of previous years; the normalcy we all are looking forward.
