Industrial Arts Workshop to Host Summer Welding Camp

By Caelin Grambau, University of Pittsburgh English Writing & Spanish double major

The Industrial Arts Workshop (IAW) is providing a free summer welding program for Pittsburgh youth at their central space in Hazelwood! The program is completely free to students who attend, and a modest stipend will be given to students who complete the program.

On behalf of the Industrial Arts Workshop, priority will be given to students from immigrant and refugee communities. Any youth from age 14 – 18 is welcome to attend the program, which will run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, from June 21 – August 18. Safety equipment and a meal will be provided to each student, and help with transportation can be requested through the program’s application. The program will be hosted in IAW’s main center at 5430 Dyke Street, Pittsburgh, PA.

Students of the Summer Welding Bootcamp will have the opportunity to learn from artists, professional craftsmen, and Mobile Sculpture Workshop alumni about the artistic process and safety standards of welding, as well as participate in field trips to discover and explore different types of art and trades. By the end of the program, students will make their own sculpture for the Hazelwood community.
