There is something for everyone at Pittsburgh Cares! As the warm weather approaches, so does the busy volunteering season. Pittsburgh Cares, the only organization in Southwestern Pennsylvania to focus solely on volunteering, has been serving the greater Pittsburgh area for over 30 years.

Our mission is simple – “To make volunteering easy, accessible, and fun for people of all ages and backgrounds,” says Nina Zappa, Project Director of the organization’s Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The work volunteers provide not only offers crucial support for nonprofit organizations but volunteering also has numerous benefits for the individual.

Bud Scott, who started as a volunteer in Pittsburgh Cares’ Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) after moving back to Pittsburgh understand the benefits firsthand –

“After my retirement and return to Pittsburgh, I experienced feelings of emptiness in my life and that something was missing but wasn’t sure where to start. I did an online search and found Pittsburgh Cares and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Getting connected with RSVP gave me a new purpose. It has allowed me to use my skills in new ways and regain a sense of relevancy that I lost after retiring. The interactions with different generations and types of people has given me a new energy and excitement.”

Pittsburgh Cares’ Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is for anyone over the age of 55, retired or still working, who wants to use their skills, knowledge, and time to create positive change in their communities, all while having fun and building social connections.

For kids, seniors, and everyone in between

Although RSVP is specifically for individuals aged over 55, Pittsburgh Cares has a variety of opportunities for kids, seniors and everyone in between. Any individual can create an account on pittsburghcares.org and sign up to volunteer at one of the many opportunities listed on the website and community calendar. Volunteer projects range from community clean-ups, serving in food pantries, helping at local farmer’s markets, or refurbishing old computers for redistribution- just to name a few!

For those interested in joining the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (there are additional fun benefits for RSVP members!) email rsvp@pittsburghcares.org.
