
Each year the University of Pittsburgh recognizes faculty members around the world. The University chose two Latino faculty members for the 2020 Awards – Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco, a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician and associate professor at Pitt in the School of Medicine, and Carmelo Mesa-Lago, Ph.D., Economics and Latin American Studies Professor. Carmelo Mesa-Lago, Ph.D. – The University of Pittsburgh awards Professor Mesa-Lago one of two 2020 Sheth Distinguished Faculty Awards for International Achievement in recognition of his influential work across the globe and strengthening of Pitt’s profile both at home and abroad.
(From the University of Pittsburgh Bio) – Professor Mesa-Lago is the Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, a visiting professor, researcher and/or lecturer in 40 countries, and the author of 94 books and 318 academic articles published in 8 languages in 34 countries. He is a Past President of the Latin American Studies Association, member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and of editorial boards of six academic journals. Professor MesaLago was awarded in 2007 the International Labor Organization Prize on Decent Work shared with Nelson Mandela and in 1991 the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Prize on Social Security. Diego Chaves-Gnecco, MD, MPH – The University of Pittsburgh awards Professor Chaves-Gnecco one of two 2020 Sheth Distinguished Faculty Awards for International Achievement in recognition of his influential work.
(From the University of Pittsburgh Bio) – Diego Chaves-Gnecco MD, MPH is a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician, Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, Director and Founder of the program Salud Para Niños and an associate faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, Center for Latin American Studies.
Professor Chaves-Gnecco has been a trailblazer at the University of Pittsburgh for twenty-two years, first as resident in pediatrics, later as a fellow in developmentalbehavioral pediatrics, and over the last 12 years as a faculty member to the creation and expansion of the first pediatric bilingual-bicultural clinic/medical home for the Hispanic population of Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA), Salud Para Niños (Health for the Children).
