The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh announced the new date for its 40th Latin American and Caribbean Festival – Saturday, October 2, 2021. The festival, normally celebrated in April, was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and has now been permanenetly moved to the fall semester. This year’s event will follow all necessary CDC guidelines to keep students and the community safe as they take part in this amazing celebration.
This innovative event was originally conceived by Dr. Carmelo Mesa-Lago and Shirley Kregar as a way to bring Latin American culture to Pitt students in 1979 and has now grown into a colorful tradition. Yearly the festival attracts more than 3,000 people and has been an essential part of Latin American culture celebrations in Pittsburgh for generations.
The Festival reflects the diversity of Latin America and the Caribbean, connecting participants of all ages through attractions including
- cultural activities,
- food vendors,
- kids crafts,
- and art and music centered on Latin American and Caribbean traditions and celebrations.
Moreover, the Festival’s appeal includes the opportunity to access travelling consulates, advocacy and ancillary legal services and support. Please join us for this joyful yearly happening as we celebrate our roots and look forward to an auspicious future.
