How to Make a Homemade Mask out of Fabric or Cloth

Advertisements

Medical experts and PA officials have recommended the use of face masks in public to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The Pennsylvania Department of Health recently shared guides to make cloth masks at home. Masks should be worn when you leave your home looking for groceries, medications, or vital supplies for your home.

Below are the Department of Health’s instructions on how to make a mask at home. We have provided resources to our Spanish readers as well. We are here to support our community in these difficult times.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Measure and cut two pieces of fabric in a rectangle pattern to fit snugly around the face (size 12 in by 6 in is standard for adults)
  2. Tightly sew both layers together on all edges
  3. Cut fabric ties to fit around the ears
  4. Sew the ties to the insides of the mask on the smaller edge, repeat on both sides
  5. Resew the sides to ensure a tight seal between both pieces of fabric and the earpiece
